He was the lord of Osaka Castle in the early Edo period, and the lord of Otaki in Kazusa, Odawara in Sagami, and Iwatsuki in Musashi. He was the governor of Iyo. He was the eldest son of Abe Masakatsu, a subordinate general of the Tokugawa clan. His mother was the daughter of Ehara Sadatsugu. He was born in Mikawa. He served Tokugawa Ieyasu through to Iemitsu, and in 1600 he was appointed as the head clerk of the Shoin and had a stipend of 10,000 koku in Musashi Hatogaya. In 1615 he was given 15,000 koku. The following year he was given as the head clerk. He was active in both the winter and summer campaigns of Osaka. In 1616 he was given 22,000 koku, and was appointed as the soshaban, with a stipend of 30,000 koku in Otaki the following year, 50,000 koku in Odawara the following year, 55,000 koku in Iwatsuki in 1624, and 56,000 koku the following year, and he was transferred and increased in rank. In 1629 he was appointed as the lord of Osaka Castle and had a stipend of 86,000 koku. In 1614, upon learning of the outbreak of the Shimabara Rebellion, Masatsugu ordered the Kyushu feudal lords to dispatch forces without waiting for orders from Edo, and was praised by Shogun Iemitsu for his flexible response. In 1615, he left 30,000 koku of land in Settsu, and divided the rest of his territory among his children and grandchildren. He died in Osaka Castle in 1647. 江戸前期の大坂城代,上総大多喜,相模小田原,武蔵岩槻藩主。伊予守。徳川氏の部将阿部正勝の長男。母は江原定次の娘。三河生まれ。徳川家康から家光まで仕え,慶長5(1600)年書院番頭,武蔵鳩ケ谷1万石。15年には1万5000石。翌16年大番頭。大坂冬夏両陣に活躍。元和2(1616)年2万2000石,奏者番,翌年大多喜3万石,5年小田原5万石,寛永1(1624)年岩槻5万5000石,翌年5万6000石と転加封を重ねた。3年大坂城代となり8万6000石。14年島原の乱勃発を知ると,正次は江戸の指令を待たずに九州の諸大名に出兵を命じ,臨機応変の処置を将軍家光から称賛される。15年摂津3万石を残し,他の所領を子や孫に分知。正保4(1647)年大坂城中で死去。のち大坂城代の鑑といわれた。<参考文献>『岩槻市史』藩政史料上下,『大阪府史』3巻
