Shagari, S.

...The election was contested by five political parties (based in Kano State in the north). In the presidential election, NPN leader Shehu Shagari (1925- ) won about one-third of the votes, followed by UPN leader Awolo. The NPN also won both the House of Representatives elections, the state gubernatorial elections, and the state assembly elections, and in October of the same year, Shagari became president, returning to civilian rule for the first time in 13 years.
