A star whose magnetic field strength changes over time. In 1946, H. Babcock discovered the Zeeman effect in the spectrum of 78 Virgo. Since then, magnetic fields have been detected in over 100 stars. Many of these have a magnetic field whose polarity reverses or whose strength changes with a period of about 10 days. The double star Cor Caroli, alpha Canes Venatici, exhibits a magnetic field that varies from -1400 G (gauss) to 1600 G with a period of 5.5 days. HD215441 in Lacerta has been observed to have the strongest magnetic field, at 34,400 G. White dwarfs and neutron stars are thought to have even stronger magnetic fields.
