Swiss organic chemist. Born in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. Received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1975 for his research into the stereochemistry of organic molecules and reactions. He studied chemistry at the Technical University in Prague from 1924 to 1929, receiving his doctorate. In 1935 he became an associate professor of organic chemistry at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Zagreb, and in 1941 he moved to Zurich, where he became a professor of organic chemistry at the Federal Institute of Technology. He was a member of the Royal Society in London and the International Academy of Sciences in the United States, among other foreign associations. Originally interested in natural products and organic molecules with complex three-dimensional structures, he studied alkaloids, iodine-containing terpenes and steroids, and contributed to research into isomerization methods and atomic and molecular arrangements.

スイスの有機化学者。ユーゴスラビアのサラエボに生まれる。有機分子や反応の立体化学的研究によって，1975年度ノーベル化学賞を受ける。1924年から29年にかけてプラハ工科大学で化学を学び，博士となる。35年ザグレブ大学の工学部で有機化学の準教授，41年チューリヒに移り，連邦工科大学で有機化学の教授を務めた。ロンドンのローヤル･ソサエティ，アメリカの国際科学アカデミーなどの外国会員となる。もともと複雑な立体をもった天然物や有機分子に興味をもち，アルカロイド，ヨウ素を含んでいるテルペンやステロイドなどを研究，異性化の方法や原子･分子の配列の研究に貢献した。
