1906‐1998 Swiss organic chemist. Born in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. Received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1975 for his research into the stereochemistry of organic molecules and reactions. He studied chemistry at the Technical University in Prague from 1924 to 1929, receiving his doctorate. In 1935 he became an associate professor of organic chemistry at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Zagreb, and in 1941 he moved to Zurich, where he became a professor of organic chemistry at the Federal Institute of Technology. He was a member of the Royal Society in London and the International Academy of Sciences in the United States, among other foreign associations. Originally interested in natural products and organic molecules with complex three-dimensional structures, he studied alkaloids, iodine-containing terpenes and steroids, and contributed to research into isomerization methods and atomic and molecular arrangements.
