The appendages and soft-bodied structures are well preserved, and the fauna is unique, including various trilobitomorphs such as Burgessia and Waptia , which resemble trilobites, Aysheaia , a primitive arthropod with caterpillar-like segments and multiple legs, and Canadia , a polychaete with delicate segments. It contains more than 130 species from 70 genera, but the Burgess Shale fauna, which is common in strata of the same period, is rarely found.
