…The Burgess Shale, which corresponds to the Middle Cambrian period, is a fine-grained rock that is believed to have been deposited rapidly in a deltaic manner under a reducing environment. Many invertebrates are fossilized in the rock. The appendages and soft-bodied structures are well preserved, and the fauna is unique, including various trilobitomorphs such as Burgessia and Waptia , which resemble trilobites, Aysheaia , a primitive arthropod with caterpillar-like segments and multiple legs, and Canadia , a polychaete with delicate segments. It contains more than 130 species from 70 genera, but the Burgess Shale fauna, which is common in strata of the same period, is rarely found. This is probably because the Burgess Shale fauna and many other trilobite groups lived in different ecological environments. …
