Born: January 1, 1904 in Sendai [Died] June 22, 1966. Tokyo Oriental legal historian. Maiden name Sugano. After graduating from Keika Junior High School and Matsumoto Senior High School, he entered the Faculty of Law at the University of Tokyo in 1925. After graduation, he became an assistant and then a researcher at the newly established Institute of Oriental Culture, where he studied under Kaoru Nakata. He published "Tang Ling Shui" (1933), and in the following year, he received the Imperial Academy Prize. He received a doctorate in law for "Research on Legal Documents of the Tang and Song Dynasties" (37), and in 1942, he became a professor at the University of Tokyo and worked hard to establish the Institute for Oriental Culture. From 1939 onwards, he studied the methods of legal sociology through research on rural customs in North China, mainly with Suehiro Gentaro, and published "Chugoku no Shakai to Guildo" (51) and other works. His "Chugoku no Housei Shi Kenkyu" (4 volumes, 59-64) received the Asahi Culture Prize the following year. He retired in 1964, and went to England in 1965 to become a lecturer at the University of London, but was involved in a traffic accident and died shortly after returning to Japan.
