A nun in colonial Mexico. After serving the Viceroy and his wife as a lady-in-waiting, she entered religious life. She discovered an interest in literature at an early age, and under the influence of Góngora and Calderón de la Barca, she produced highly technical and intellectual works. Her representative works include the long poem The Dream, which uses a flamboyant approach to sing of insatiable intellectual curiosity and the limits of human knowledge, and the Eucharistic play The Divine Narcissus, which allegorically depicts the relationship between Christ and humanity. Although she is highly regarded as a poet, she also produced excellent treatises on theology and women's rights.

植民期メキシコの修道女。女官として副王夫妻に仕えた後，修道生活に入る。幼少の頃から文学にめざめ，ゴンゴラおよびカルデロン・デ・ラ・バルカの影響の下，極めて技巧的・理知的な作品を残した。代表作に，飽くなき知的探求心と人知の限界を誇飾主義的手法を駆使して歌いあげた長編詩《夢》，キリストと人類の関係を寓意的に描いた聖体劇《神聖なるナルキッソス》などがある。詩人としての評価が高いが，神学や女権に関する優れた論考もある。
