[Japanese Cafe]
The first coffee shop in Japan was the Kahisakan, which opened in Kuromon-cho, Shita-ya, Tokyo, in April 1888 (Meiji 21), but it wasn't until 1911 that cafes or shops calling themselves cafes appeared. That spring, Café Printemps opened in Hiyoshi-cho, Ginza, followed by Café Lion on the corner of Owari-cho in Ginza in August and Café Paulista in Minaminabe-cho in November. Printemps was run by the Western-style painter Matsuyama Shozo, and sold Western-style food and liquor. Along with Maison Kounosu in Koami-cho, Nihonbashi, which opened in 1908, it became a gathering place for painters, writers and theater people, and also a hotbed of a new art movement.
