Novelist, translator, and children's writer. Born on November 27, 1890, in Fukuda Village, Asakura County, Fukuoka Prefecture (present-day Asakura City). Graduated from the French Literature Department of Tokyo Imperial University. While still a student, he published "The Lake and Them" in the inaugural issue of the third issue of "Shinshicho" in 1914 (Taisho 3). His subsequent work "He and His Uncle," published in "Teikoku Bungaku" in the same year, caught the eye of Nakamura Seiko, and he entered the literary world. His early works exude a clear and pure mood reminiscent of the modern Russian novelist Zaitsev. He subsequently lectured in French literature at several universities and published numerous novels and fairy tales. His representative collections of novels include "If I Were Alive," "Out in the Wild," "The Clown," and "The White Moth," and his collections of fairy tales include "The Egg of Dreams" and "Emilian's Journey." He also translated Hugo's "Les Miserables" and Romain Rolland's "Jean-Christophe," which are highly acclaimed as excellent translations. He also wrote many other essays and critiques, as well as a few plays. Although the avant-garde style of Toyoshima's novels was not generally understood, he was highly praised by some discerning people. He died on June 18, 1955.
