Renault is the largest automobile manufacturer in France and one of the world's leading companies, with 53% of its capital invested in by the government. Its headquarters are in Boulogne-Billancourt (western suburb of Paris). The company was founded in 1898 at its current location by Louis Renault (1877-1944) as Société Renault Frères, and began producing passenger cars. Renault moved to the United States in 1909 and introduced the Taylor System. During World War I, the company expanded its production facilities by producing military supplies such as tanks in addition to producing automobiles.
