Japanese: 工芸作物 - こうげいさくもつ

A general term for crops grown for the purpose of using them as raw materials for crafts and industry. Even edible crops are classified as industrial crops if they are produced as industrial raw materials. Since the quality of the raw materials determines the quality of the product, industrial crops place particular importance on quality as well as yield. To obtain high-quality products, each crop is grown in land suitable for it, and producers are required to have advanced cultivation techniques. For this reason, cultivation tends to be concentrated in certain regions or groups, and they tend to become specialty products in certain areas, and sometimes they are cultivated commercially, such as on plantations.

The industrial crops include:

(1) Fibers: Cotton, hemp, rush, paper mulberry, etc.

(2) Oils and fats: Sesame, soybean, safflower, oil palm, etc.

(3) Sugar: Sugar cane, sugar beet, etc.

(4) Starch and glue: Sweet potato, potato, cassava, corn, etc.

(5) Recreational items: tea, coffee, tobacco, etc.

(6) Spices: Pepper, cinnamon, bay leaf, saffron, etc.

(7) Fragrances: Lavender, jasmine, rose, vanilla, etc.

(8) Resins: Rubber tree, gum arabic, sumac, etc.

(9) Dyes: indigo, safflower, turmeric, etc.

(10) Medicinal herbs: coptis, ginseng, poppy, hops, etc.

(11) Tannins: Wattle, sumac, etc. Tannins are used in leatherworking, medicine, and dyeing.

工芸や工業の原料とすることを目的に栽培される作物の総称。食用作物でもそれが工業原料として生産される場合には工芸作物に分類される。原料の良否が製品の質につながるため、工芸作物では収量だけでなく品質がとくに重視される。良品質の生産物を得るために、各作物はそれぞれ適した土地で栽培され、また生産者には高度な栽培技術が要求される。このため一部の地域や集団に栽培が集中し、一定地域で特産物化する傾向があり、また、プランテーションなど企業的栽培が行われることがある。

　工芸作物には次のようなものがある。

(1)繊維用　ワタ、アサ、イグサ、コウゾなど。

(2)油脂用　ゴマ、ダイズ、ベニバナ、アブラヤシなど。

(3)糖用　サトウキビ、テンサイなど。

(4)デンプン・糊(のり)用　サツマイモ、ジャガイモ、キャッサバ、トウモロコシなど。

(5)嗜好(しこう)用　チャ、コーヒー、タバコなど。

(6)香辛料　コショウ、シナモン、ゲッケイジュ、サフランなど。

(7)香料　ラベンダー、ジャスミン、バラ、バニラなど。

(8)樹脂類　パラゴムノキ、アラビアゴムノキ、ウルシなど。

(9)染料　アイ、ベニバナ、ウコンなど。

(10)薬用　オウレン、チョウセンニンジン、ケシ、ホップなど。

(11)タンニン用　ワトル、ウルシなど。タンニンは製革用や薬用、染色用として用いる。
