Greenwich Village

Japanese: グリニチ･ビレッジ（英語表記）Greenwich Village

A neighborhood with a bohemian atmosphere in the lower Manhattan district of New York City, USA, centered around Washington Square. From just after World War I, artists and writers began to live here, attracted by its old European-style streetscape and low rents. It was also here that Eugene O'Neill created the first so-called off-Broadway experimental theater. Lined with second-hand bookstores, small theaters, art shops, antique stores, and coffee shops that held poetry readings, the word "Village" became synonymous with an atmosphere of intellectual and artistic freedom.

アメリカ合衆国，ニューヨーク市マンハッタン地区南部の下町で，ワシントン･スクエアを中心とするボヘミア的雰囲気をもつ区画。第1次大戦直後の頃から，その古いヨーロッパ的風趣に富んだ街並みと低家賃に引かれて，芸術家や作家が住みつくようになった。ユージン･オニールが，最初のいわゆるオフ･ブロードウェーの実験劇場を作ったのもここである。古本屋，小劇場，アート･ショップ，骨董屋，詩の朗読会を行うコーヒー店などが建ち並び，以後は〈ビレッジ〉と言えば，知的･芸術的自由の雰囲気の代名詞のようであった。
