Mud dauber (mud wasp)

Japanese: ドロバチ(泥蜂) - ドロバチ（英語表記）mud dauber

A general term for insects in the Eumenidae family of the Hymenoptera, excluding the Eumenidae. Unlike Eumenidae, which have a narrow second abdominal segment, this is wide. Most are black with yellow or orange-brown spots or bands. They build nests of mud in hollow dead plant stems and branches, bamboo tubes, holes in wood, depressions and crevices in rocks, and under the eaves of houses, and store prey for their larvae. Many hunt lepidopteran larvae such as those of the Pyralidae, Tortricidae, and Noctuidae families. There are more than a dozen species found in Japan. All are around 10 to 20 mm in body length.

膜翅目ドロバチ科Eumenidaeのうちトックリバチ類を除く昆虫の総称。腹部第2節が細くなっているトックリバチ類と異なり幅が広い。多くのものは黒色で，黄色や橙褐色の斑紋や帯紋がある。中空の植物の枯れた茎や枝，竹筒，木材の穴，岩石のくぼみや割れ目，人家の軒下などに泥で巣をつくり幼虫のために獲物を蓄える。多くのものはメイガ科，ハマキガ科，ヤガ科などの鱗翅目の幼虫を狩る。日本には十数種分布する。いずれも体長10～20mm内外。
