A city in the southeastern part of Gunma Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1948. It occupies the alluvial lowlands of the Tone River and the Watarase River and the eastern part of the Watarase River alluvial fan. The city center developed as a post town on the Nikko Reiheishi Kaido road and a temple town of Daikoin (Kosodate Donryu). The Tobu Railway's Isesaki Line, Kiryu Line, and Koizumi Line intersect here, and the Kita-Kanto Expressway also runs through the city. During World War II, it was a military industrial city, producing Nakajima Aircraft and other companies. In 1960, it was designated as a metropolitan urban development area, and factories of automobiles, metals, machinery, plastics, etc. have moved in, making it the number one city in the prefecture in terms of the value of manufactured goods shipped, reaching 1.2667 trillion yen (2003). Kanayama Castle in the north is a typical medieval mountain castle, and is currently the site of Gunma Prefectural Children's World. In March 2005, Ojima-cho, Nitta-cho, and Yabutsuka-honmachi-cho of Nitta-gun were incorporated into the city. 175.54 km2 . 216,465 people (2010). 群馬県南東部の市。1948年市制。利根川と渡良瀬川の沖積低地及び渡良瀬川扇状地の東部を占める。中心市街は日光例幣使街道の宿場町,大光院(子育呑竜(こそだてどんりゅう))の門前町として発達。東武鉄道の伊勢崎線,桐生線,小泉線が交差し,北関東自動車道も通じる。第2次世界大戦中は中島飛行機などの軍需工業都市であった。1960年首都圏都市開発区域に指定されて自動車,金属,機械,プラスチックなどの工場が進出し,製造品出荷額では1兆2667億円(2003)を上げ,県内1位を占めている。北部の金山城は中世の典型的な山城で,現在は群馬県立こどもの国がある。2005年3月新田郡尾島町,新田町,藪塚本町町を編入。175.54km2。21万6465人(2010)。
