Ashikita [town] - Ashikita
A town in Ashikita District, southwest of Kumamoto Prefecture. Most of the town is mountainous, facing the Yatsushiro Sea to the west. The town's center is the port town of Sashiki, located at the mouth of the Sashiki River, and is served by the Hisatsu Orange Railway. Fisheries processing, lumber processing, and mandarin orange cultivation are thriving, and utase net fishing is practiced. In January 2005, Taura Town, Ashikita District, was incorporated. 233.98 km2 . Population: 19,316 (2010).

熊本県南西部，芦北郡の町。大部分が山地で，西は八代(やつしろ)海に臨む。中心は佐敷川河口部の港町佐敷で肥薩おれんじ鉄道が通じる。水産加工，木材加工，ミカン栽培が盛んで，打瀬(うたせ)網漁が行われる。2005年１月葦北郡田浦町を編入。233.98km2。１万9316人（2010）。
