Ashikita [town] - Ashikita
A town in Ashikita District, southwest of Kumamoto Prefecture. Most of the town is mountainous, facing the Yatsushiro Sea to the west. The town's center is the port town of Sashiki, located at the mouth of the Sashiki River, and is served by the Hisatsu Orange Railway. Fisheries processing, lumber processing, and mandarin orange cultivation are thriving, and utase net fishing is practiced. In January 2005, Taura Town, Ashikita District, was incorporated. 233.98 km2 . Population: 19,316 (2010).
