Gravity is an artificial force created in a weightless world such as that inside a spaceship. On September 14, 1966, the American Gemini 11 created artificial gravity for the first time by spinning an unmanned Agena around on a 30m rope. The centrifugal force created by the rotation acts as artificial gravity. Being in a weightless state for an extended period of time can weaken the activity of the heart and cause problems such as calcium leaking into the blood, so artificial gravity is necessary for long periods of life in a space station or for manned interplanetary flights.
