Teshio Plain - Teshio Heiya

Japanese: 天塩平野 - てしおへいや
Teshio Plain - Teshio Heiya
A plain in northern Hokkaido overlooking the Sea of Japan. Its area is 230 km2 . It is surrounded by the Teshio Mountains to the north, south, and east, and the west is a straight sandy beach facing the Sea of Japan, with several parallel rows of sand dunes at an altitude of 10 to 50 meters. The inside of the dunes has poor drainage, forming the low-lying Sarobetsu Plain, which includes the Penke Swamp, Panke Swamp, and Kabuto Swamp. The peat bogs are extensive, and are covered with plants such as sphagnum moss, cotton grass, yatana, and crowberry, with much of the land unused. In places, there are spruce forests, surrounded by bamboo grass, reeds, and alder. In recent years, development of peat bogs has progressed, and the Maruyama area of Toyotomi Town is a model area. The average monthly temperature from May to October is a cool 14.5°C, so rice cultivation is not carried out, and grassland dairy farming is thriving. There are many ponds and marshes, and more than 100 species of wild birds live there. The Sarobetsu Primeval Flower Garden is famous for its colonies of Hemerocallis sieboldii and Iris amplexicaule. The northern coast area belongs to the Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park.
