The capital of northern Utah in the western United States. Its population was 172,000 (1994), and the metropolitan area population was 1.13 million (1992), accounting for about 55% of the state's population. Mormons from the east settled about 25 km southeast of the Great Salt Lake in 1847 and established the town. Surrounded by mountains, wilderness, and salt lakes, it became an important stopover point for stagecoaches and transcontinental railroads. It is a distribution center for various agricultural products, and industries such as metal refining and oil refining have also developed, taking advantage of its strategic location as a transportation hub.
