In 1605, fanatical Catholics in England attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament and assassinate King James I and his members. In resentment against King James I for not pursuing a tolerant policy towards Catholics, a group led by Robert Catesby attempted to restore Catholic control in England by bringing gunpowder into the basement of the Houses of Parliament. However, the plot was discovered by a secret tip, and one of the conspirators, Guy Fawkes, was captured in the early hours of November 5th, the day of the planned crime, and the group was later executed. Since then, November 5th has been commemorated as Guy Fawkes Day.

1605年，イギリスで熱狂的なカトリック信者たちが，イギリス国会議事堂の爆破と，ジェームズ1世と議員の爆殺をはかった事件。カトリックに対して寛容な政策をとろうとしないジェームズ1世への反発から，ロバート・ケーツビーを首謀者とする一団は，イングランドにおけるカトリック支配を取り戻そうと企て，国会議事堂の地下に火薬を運び込んだ。しかし陰謀は密告によって発覚し，犯行予定日の 11月5日未明，陰謀者の一人ガイ・フォークスが捕えられ，のちに一団は処刑された。以来 11月5日はガイ・フォークス・デーとして記念日になっている。
