A Buddhist holy place. Known as Bodh Gaya or its transliteration Buddha Gaya. Also called Bodh Gaya. A village on the banks of the Lilajan (ancient name Nairanjana River, Chinese name Nirenzenga) tributary of the Ganges (Ganga) River, in central Bihar, India. 10km south of Gaya. This is where Buddha attained enlightenment after ascetic practices. The sacred area is surrounded by railings, and includes a Vajra throne, a bodhi tree planted for generations, and the Great Monastery (Dabodai Temple), founded around the 6th century and rebuilt in 1881.
