Bodhgaya

A Buddhist holy place. Known as Bodh Gaya or its transliteration Buddha Gaya. Also called Bodh Gaya. A village on the banks of the Lilajan (ancient name Nairanjana River, Chinese name Nirenzenga) tributary of the Ganges (Ganga) River, in central Bihar, India. 10km south of Gaya. This is where Buddha attained enlightenment after ascetic practices. The sacred area is surrounded by railings, and includes a Vajra throne, a bodhi tree planted for generations, and the Great Monastery (Dabodai Temple), founded around the 6th century and rebuilt in 1881. In 2002, the Great Monastery was registered as a World Heritage Site.

仏教の聖地。ブッダガヤーまたはこの音写の仏陀伽耶で知られる。ボドガヤとも。インド，ビハール州中部，ガンジス（ガンガー）川の支流リラージャーン（古名ナイランジャナー川，漢訳名尼蓮禅河(にれんぜんが)）畔にある村。ガヤーの南方10kmにある。釈迦が苦行ののち悟りを開いた所で，聖域には欄楯(らんじゅん)がめぐらされ，金剛宝座，代々植えつがれた菩提樹，６世紀ころに創建され1881年再建された大精舎（大菩提寺）がある。2002年大精舎は世界文化遺産に登録された。
