Greenwich time - Greenwich time (English spelling)

Japanese: グリニジ時 - グリニジじ（英語表記）Greenwich time

Its official name is Greenwich Mean Time, and its abbreviation is GMT. It is currently used as a synonym for mean solar time on the prime meridian (commonly known as the Greenwich Meridian), i.e. Universal Time. Since 1972, the new Coordinated Universal Time has been in use, and the current world standard time is based on Coordinated Universal Time. Although Coordinated Universal Time is fundamentally different from Universal Time, it is operated so that the time is approximate to Universal Time. Therefore, in cases where second-level accuracy is not required, such as in everyday use, it can be called Universal Time or Greenwich Time.

グリニジ平均時Greenwich mean timeが正式名称で，略号はGMT。現在は本初子午線(通称グリニジ子午線)に関する平均太陽時，つまり世界時の同義語として慣用されている。1972年以来新しく協定世界時が実用化され，現在世界の標準時はこの協定世界時を基にしている。協定世界時は原理的には世界時と異質のものではあるが，その時刻は世界時に近似するよう運用されている。そこで日常使用のように秒の精度を要しない場合には，これを世界時，またはグリニジ時と呼んでもよいことになっている。
