Amaryllis - Amaryllis (English spelling)

It is a bulbous plant of the genus Belladonna in the family Amaryllidaceae (APG classification: Amaryllidaceae), and there is one species in one genus. Recently, what is commonly called amaryllis is Hippeastrum × hybridum hort., which is native to South America, and is also called true amaryllis. Native to the Cape region of South Africa. Although not as strong as amaryllis, it grows a strong stem of 40 to 60 cm before the leaves appear, and in late September, several or more pink flowers similar to bamboo lilies bloom one after another, with a strong fragrance. After the flowering season, it produces more than 10 leaves similar to daffodils. The leaves wither when the temperature drops below -3°C, so if it is overwintered in a vinyl house or greenhouse, the leaves will remain until the end of May of the following year, then turn yellow and wither, and go dormant in summer. In contrast to Hippeastrum, it is called Cape belladonna, and white and deep pink varieties have been introduced, and breeding is also progressing. The bulbs are large, measuring over 16cm in circumference, and are best planted in summer rather than autumn. They grow vigorously, so they are better planted in the ground rather than in pots. When planting in pots, plant one bulb in a No. 6 pot, with good drainage and plenty of fertilizer. The English name, Naked Lady, comes from the cuteness of the flower.

ヒガンバナ科（APG分類：ヒガンバナ科）ベラドンナ属の球根草で1属1種。近時一般にアマリリスとよばれているのは南アメリカ原産のヒペアストルムHippeastrum × hybridum hort.であり、これに対して、ホンアマリリスともいう。南アフリカのケープ地方原産。ヒガンバナほどではないが葉が出る前に40～60センチメートルの強い茎を伸ばし、9月下旬、ササユリに似た桃色花を数個以上次々と開き、強い芳香がある。花期を過ぎてからスイセンに似た葉を10枚以上出す。葉は零下3℃以下になると枯れるので、ビニルハウスや温室で越冬させると、翌年の5月末まで葉が残り、のちに黄変して枯れ、夏季は休眠する。ヒペアストルムに対し、ケープベラドンナとよばれ、白色、濃桃色などの品種が導入され、品種改良も進んでいる。球根は球周り16センチメートル以上の大球で、秋植えより夏植えのほうがよく、旺盛(おうせい)に生育するので鉢植えよりは地植えのほうが適する。鉢植えは6号鉢に1球植えにし、排水はよく、肥料は多めにする。英名ネイキッド・レディ（裸の美女）は花の愛らしさに由来する。
