Cripps, Sir Richard Stafford
Born: April 24, 1889, London
[Died] April 21, 1952, Zurich British politician. Studied chemistry at the University of London. His aunt was the well-known socialist B. Webb, and he developed an interest in socialism at an early age. In 1931 he was a Labour MP. In 1939 he was expelled from the party for advocating a national cabinet. From 1940 to 1942 he was ambassador to the Soviet Union, and in 1942 he headed the Cripps Mission to India. From 1942 to 1945 he was Minister for Aircraft Production. In 1945 he was allowed to return to the Labour Party, and in the same year he became Minister of Trade. In 1946 he again headed the Indian Mission. In 1947 he became Minister for Economic Affairs. From 1947 to 1950 he worked hard to revive the British economy as Chancellor of the Exchequer, but resigned due to ill health.
