Armageddon (Greek: Harmagedōn)

Armageddon (Greek: Harmagedōn)

The name of the place in the Bible where God fights and wins against the devil, the final world war. Armageddon is a transliteration of Hebrew into Greek, originally referring to the hill of Megiddo, an ancient city in Palestine. It was famous as an ancient battlefield in the Old Testament, and was inspired by this, as described in the New Testament, Book of Revelation, Chapter 16, Verse 16, "The unclean spirits gathered kings together to a place called Armageddon in Hebrew," and it came to mean the final world war. In modern times, the decisive nuclear battle between East and West at the end of the Cold War has been likened to Armageddon, and it has also come to be used in the titles of novels and movies (Armageddon).

There are several theories about the origin of the name Armageddon, including that there was a place called Armageddon near the Euphrates River, that it is the name of a mountain in Jerusalem, or that it is Mount Carmel near Haifa.
