The first generation. Edo Joruri Tayu. Founder of the Handayubushi style. Real name Sakamoto Hannojo. He was skilled in preaching and liturgical writings, but later studied Joruri under Edo Hizennojo and formed a family during the Jokyo and Genroku eras ( 1684-1704 ). In 1712 ( Shotoku 2 ), he performed a puppet show. He died in 1743 ( Kanpo 3 ). The name Edo Handayu died out after seven generations. 初世。江戸の浄瑠璃太夫。半太夫節の開祖。本名坂本半之丞。説教祭文に巧みであったが、のち浄瑠璃を江戸肥前掾に学び、貞享・元祿年間(一六八四‐一七〇四)一家をなした。正徳二年(一七一二)操り芝居を興行。寛保三年(一七四三)没。江戸半太夫の名は七世で絶えた。
