A fast ocean-going sailing ship that was active on the world's oceans from around 1830 until the development of steamships. Equipped with large square sails and a hull that could withstand rough seas, it was widely used on routes to the Atlantic, India, and Australia. It is said that the first clippers were built in Baltimore, USA, and American clippers were mainstream at first, but after the Civil War, British clippers became dominant. In particular, tea clippers, which transported tea from China to Europe, are famous in the history of maritime transport. → Related topics Sailing ships Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
