Byzantine Emperor (reigned 450-457). He was a former officer under Aspar, the chancellor under Theodosius II, and after the death of the emperor, he married Pulcheria, Pulcheria's sister, and ascended to the throne. His reign was peaceful both at home and abroad. His greatest achievement was convening the Fourth Ecumenical Council (451) in Chalcedon. At this council, Monophysites and Nestorians were rejected as heretics, and the Constantinople faction in the capital gained the upper hand over the Alexandrian and Antiochene factions, which were the mainstream in the orthodox-heresy debate in the first half of the 5th century. In addition, Article 28 of the Council stipulated that the Patriarch of Constantinople and the Pope of Rome have equal status in law, but that the Pope of Rome is recognized as having honorary primacy.
