Until 2010, this was the largest island in the Netherlands Antilles. It is also called Curacao. Since 1918, when Shell Oil established a refinery to refine Venezuelan crude oil, the island has relied on oil refining, but in 1957, a seawater desalination plant was built, and tourism has developed. Offshore business has also been active since the 1980s. Curacao (alcohol) is a specialty product. It has been a Dutch territory since 1634. Its capital is Willemstad. With the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles in October 2010, it became an independent autonomous territory. 444 km2 . 141,766 people (2009).
