1601‐58 Spanish writer and Jesuit. He served as professor at seminaries in Valencia, Aragon, and Catalonia, and was well-known for his preaching. However, he also caused controversy by ignoring the rules of the order and publishing works under false names without the permission of his superiors. In 1657 he was punished and forbidden to write, and although he wanted to leave the order, he was not allowed to do so, and he died of illness. His works are permeated with a deep pessimism that sees the real world and human beings as evil and stupid. His works, "Eroica" (1637) and "The wise man" (1646), each provide guidance on how an outstanding person or an intelligent ordinary person should deal with this corrupt society.
