Spanish writer and Jesuit. He served as professor at seminaries in Valencia, Aragon, and Catalonia, and was well-known for his preaching. However, he also caused controversy by ignoring the rules of the order and publishing works under false names without the permission of his superiors. In 1657 he was punished and forbidden to write, and although he wanted to leave the order, he was not allowed to do so, and he died of illness. His works are permeated with a deep pessimism that sees the real world and human beings as evil and stupid. His works, "Eroica" (1637) and "The wise man" (1646), each provide guidance on how an outstanding person or an intelligent ordinary person should deal with this corrupt society.

スペインの文筆家，イエズス会士。バレンシア，アラゴン，カタルニャ各地の神学校教授を歴任，説教でも評判を得る一方，会則を無視して，長上の許可なく著作を偽名で出版しつづけ，物議をかもした。1657年に処罰されて執筆を禁じられ，脱会を希望するが入れられぬまま病没した。彼の作品は，現実社会と人間を邪悪･愚鈍とみる深いペシミズムで貫かれている。《英雄》(1637)，《識者》(1646)はおのおの，卓越した人間あるいは聡明な通常人がこの腐敗した社会にうちかつにはどう対処すべきかを指南する。
