Obikareha (band dead leaves) - Obikareha (English spelling) Malacosoma neustria
An insect of the Lepidoptera family, Lasiocampidae (illustration). A small moth, the wingspan of males is about 2.5 cm, while that of females is about 3.5 cm. Males are light yellowish brown, while females are brown, with two horizontal stripes on their forewings. Widely distributed from Europe to Taiwan and Japan. Very common throughout Japan, it appears once a year around May-June, and often flies to lights. The larvae feed on the leaves of plum, cherry, peach, apple, rose, willow, and poplar trees. They are often found on plum trees planted as garden trees, so they are called plum caterpillars, and because they live in a communal nest by spinning silk on the branches and disperse at the end of their life, they are also called tent caterpillars.
