Kazusa seaweed

...The dried sardines and dried sardine meal produced here served as fertilizer for rice in the Tokai region, cotton in the Kinai region, indigo in Awa, mandarin oranges in Kii, and other agricultural products. Kazusa nori on the Tokyo Bay coast also began in 1821 (Bunsei 4) when Edo nori middleman Omiya Jinbei built a sieve at the mouth of the Koito River as an experiment, and in 1823 he began cultivating nori in Hitomi Village (Hitomi, Kimitsu City), gradually spreading to other coastal villages. In terms of agricultural production, in the spring of 1604 (Keicho 9), the magistrate Shimada Isaku completed the construction of Ojagaike Pond (Togane City), which facilitated water access, and large-scale land reclamation was carried out in the Togane region as part of the policy of encouraging industry in the Kyoho Reforms of the eighth shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune.

…生産される干鰯（ほしか）･〆粕（しめかす）は東海地区の米穀，畿内の木綿，阿波のアイ，紀伊のミカン等農産物の肥料となった。また東京湾岸の上総ノリは，1821年(文政4)に江戸のノリ仲買商人近江屋甚兵衛が試みに小糸川河口で篊（ひび）を建てたことにはじまり，23年人見村(君津市人見)でノリの養殖を始め，しだいに沿岸諸村にひろまった。農業生産の面では，1604年(慶長9)春，代官島田伊作により雄蛇ヶ池(東金市)が完成して水利を便にし，8代将軍徳川吉宗の享保改革における殖産興業政策の一環として東金地方に大規模な開墾が行われた。…
