[Died] May 24, 1974. New York, USA. American jazz composer, pianist, and orchestra conductor. His real name was Edward Kennedy Ellington. In 1918, he formed an orchestra with friends from his music school days, and in 1922, he moved to New York. In 1927, he appeared at the famous Cotton Club and attracted attention. In 1931, he toured around the United States, and in 1933, he toured England and Central and South America. In 1939, he visited five European countries, and his orchestra reached its peak. The orchestra was originally made up of about 10 people, but expanded to about 15 people, and he is said to be the founder of big band jazz. In 1943, he performed at the first Carnegie Hall concert, and in 1950, he recorded a long concert arrangement for LP. After that, he went into a period of decline, but he had a great success at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1956. His activities did not decline after that, and in 1969, he held a party for his 70th birthday hosted by the president at the White House. He is also one of America's greatest composers, having written over 2,000 pieces of music, including the masterpieces Black and Tan Fantasy, Solitude, and Take the "A" Train, as well as film scores and musicals.

アメリカのジャズ作曲家,ピアノ奏者,楽団指揮者。本名 Edward Kennedy Ellington。 1918年に音楽塾時代からの仲間と楽団を結成,22年ニューヨークに進出,27年には有名なコットンクラブに出演して脚光を浴びた。 31年アメリカ各地を巡業,33年イギリス,中南米を演奏旅行。 39年にはヨーロッパ5ヵ国を歴訪,この頃から彼の楽団は最盛期に入った。楽団は初め 10人前後で編成されたが,15人前後まで拡大し,ビッグ・バンド・ジャズの創始者といわれる。 43年には第1回カーネギー・ホール・コンサート,50年には長時間のコンサートアレンジを LP用に録音。その後やや沈滞期に入ったが,56年のニューポート・ジャズ祭で大成功をおさめた。その後も活動は衰えず,69年には大統領主催の 70歳記念パーティがホワイトハウスで開かれた。彼はまたアメリカを代表する作曲家の1人であり,大作『黒と褐色の幻想曲』 Black and Tan Fantasy,『ソリチュード』 Solitude,『A列車で行こう』 Take the "A" Trainなど 2000以上の曲を書き,映画音楽やミュージカルも手がけた。
