Also called Semito-Hamitic. A name given since the 19th century on the assumption that Hamitic languages and Semitic languages are of the same family. However, the commonly held belief that the Semitic languages of the Arabian Peninsula and the Hamitic languages of North Africa are the two major branches of the Hamitic-Semitic language family is now rejected, and alternative names such as Erythraean for Red Sea languages and Afro-Asiatic for Afro-Asiatic languages (1950, American linguist J. セム・ハム語族Semito‐Hamiticともいう。19世紀以後,ハム諸語とセム諸語とが同系であるとの想定の下に与えられた名称。しかし,アラビア半島を中心とするセム語族と北アフリカの〈ハム語族〉(ハム語)とをハム・セム語族の二大語派とする通説は現在では否定されており,誤解を招きやすいこの名称の代案として,紅海語Erythraean,アフロ・アジア語族Afro‐Asiatic(1950年,アメリカの言語学者J.グリーンバーグによる)等の呼称が提唱されている。
