Hamito-Semitic

Hamito-Semitic
Also called Semito-Hamitic. A name given since the 19th century on the assumption that Hamitic languages and Semitic languages are of the same family. However, the commonly held belief that the Semitic languages of the Arabian Peninsula and the Hamitic languages of North Africa are the two major branches of the Hamitic-Semitic language family is now rejected, and alternative names such as Erythraean for Red Sea languages and Afro-Asiatic for Afro-Asiatic languages (1950, American linguist J. Greenberg) have been proposed as alternatives to this misleading name.
