Kazushige Aoki

A military commander in the Sengoku and early Edo periods. Commonly known as Tadasuke and Tokoroemon, his given name was also Shigemichi. The eldest son of Aoki Shigenao, he first served Tokugawa Ieyasu, and gained fame for his bravery when he killed Magara Jurozaemon, a fierce general on the Asakura side, in the Battle of Anegawa in 1570. He later left Ieyasu, and served Niwa Nagahide and then Toyotomi Hideyoshi, becoming a messenger and a member of the Omomo clan. In 1585, he was granted 10,000 koku of land in Futa, Toshima County, Settsu Province (Toyonaka City) and other areas. After the Battle of Sekigahara, he became one of the seven chiefs of Osaka Castle, and in 1615, just before the Summer Siege of Osaka, he went to Sunpu as an emissary of Hideyori and was detained. After the fall of Osaka Castle, he became a monk, and later returned to serve Ieyasu. His Buddhist name was Munesa.

戦国・江戸前期の武将。通称は忠助,所右衛門。名は重通ともいった。青木重直の長男で,はじめ,徳川家康に仕え,元亀1(1570)年の姉川の戦に朝倉方の猛将として知られた真柄十郎左衛門を討ち取って勇名をはせた。その後,家康のもとを去って,丹羽長秀,次いで豊臣秀吉と主人を替え,使番,黄母衣衆となり,天正13(1585)年には摂津国豊島郡府田(豊中市)などに1万石を与えられている。関ケ原の戦ののち,大坂城の七手組頭のひとりとなり,元和1(1615)年,大坂夏の陣の直前,秀頼の使者として駿府に赴き,抑留される。大坂城落城後出家し,のち家康に再出仕した。法号宗佐。
