A local lord and land steward of Miri Manor in Aki Province in the Middle Ages. A descendant of Taira no Sadamori. Morikata was a warrior of the north side and executed for his crimes. His son Naosada fled to Musashi, lived in Kumagaya-go and took the surname Kumagaya. His son Naozane followed Minamoto no Yoritomo and recovered Kumagaya-go, which had been taken by the Kuge clan through Gunchu. His grandson Naokuni was killed in battle at Seta during the Jokyu War (1221), and as a reward, his son Naotoki was appointed land steward of Miri Manor. However, following a petition by Sukenao, the adopted brother of Naokatsu, who was killed in battle during the Jokyu War, the shogunate followed the advice of Yoshimi-nyu and granted Naotoki two-thirds of the land stewardship and Sukenao one-third of the land stewardship in 1235 (Kasei 1).
