Japanese: 自動記述 - じどうきじゅつ

The act of writing or creating text as quickly and automatically as possible, without being controlled by consciousness or technique. It was invented by Breton in 1919 and became one of the methodological principles of Surrealism. It aims to freely express the inner thoughts and unconsciousness of humans that are suppressed by reason and social morality, and is important as an attempt to reexamine the existence of the "writing subject." A typical work is "Magnetic Field" (1920), co-written by Breton and Soupault.

意識や技術の支配を受けずに，できるだけ速く自動的に文章を書いたり造形する行為のこと。1919年ブルトンによって創始され，シュルレアリスムの方法的原理の一つとなった。理性や社会道徳に抑圧されている人間の内面の思考や無意識を自由に表出させることを目的とし，〈書く主体〉のありかを問い直す試みとして重要なものである。典型的な作品にブルトンとスーポーの共同執筆による《磁場》（1920年）がある。
