Japanese: ワシ(鷲) - ワシ

A general term for large species of birds in the family Accipitridae (with wingspans of roughly 50cm or more). They are distinguished from hawks by size, not by classification. They are usually dark brown in color, with strong, sharply curved beaks and claws on their legs. They are found almost all over the world, and build their nests on rocks or large trees. They are diurnal carnivores. Six species have been recorded in Japan: Steller's sea eagle, white-tailed eagle, golden eagle, imperial eagle, spotted eagle, and black vulture, but the imperial eagle and the other three species are vagrants.

ワシタカ科の鳥のうち大型種（だいたい翼長50cm以上）の総称。タカとの区別は大きさによるもので分類上の区別ではない。普通，暗褐色，くちばしは強く，鋭く曲がり，脚には鉤爪(かぎづめ)をもつ。ほとんど全世界に分布し，巣は岩上あるいは大木上に作られる。昼行肉食性。日本にはオオワシ，オジロワシ，イヌワシ，カタシロワシ，カラフトワシ，クロハゲワシの６種が記録されているが，カタシロワシ以下の３種は迷鳥。
