Martinu

Japanese: マルティヌー
Martinu
Czech composer. Showing talent for composition and violin from an early age, he entered the Prague Conservatory from 1906 to 1910. He played violin in the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra from 1917 to 1923, during which time he studied composition under Suk. In 1923, he studied under Roussel in Paris and began full-fledged composing. He was prevented from returning to his homeland by the German annexation of the Czech Republic, and traveled to the United States in 1941. While teaching composition at Princeton University, he released five symphonies by 1946, starting with Symphony No. 1 (1942) at the request of Koussevitzky, and his style took on a stronger ethnic tone. After 1953, he lived mainly in Rome, Nice, and Basel, and died without returning to his homeland. His representative works include "Concerto Grosso" (1937), "Double Concerto for Two String Groups, Piano and Timpani" (1938), the orchestral work "In Memory of Lidice" (1943) which denounced the atrocities of the Nazis, "Symphony No. 6, Symphonic Fantasie" (1953), the oratorio "The Epic of Gilgamesh" (1955), "Piano Concerto No. 4, The Spell" (1956) dedicated to Filkusny, and seven string quartets (1918-1947). → Fournier → Related items Concerto grosso
