Rappelling. A climbing technique. A method of descending a rock or ice wall by wrapping a rope around the body. There were shoulder-mounted, waist-mounted, and carabiner-mounted methods, but since the mid-1970s, various rappelling devices have come into use because they are easier to operate and have fewer mistakes.
