Rappelling. A climbing technique. A method of descending a rock or ice wall by wrapping a rope around the body. There were shoulder-mounted, waist-mounted, and carabiner-mounted methods, but since the mid-1970s, various rappelling devices have come into use because they are easier to operate and have fewer mistakes. 懸垂下降。登山技術の一つ。岩壁や氷壁などを降りるとき，ザイルを身体に巻きつけて下降する方法。肩がらみ，腰がらみ，カラビナ下降などがあったが，1970年代半ばからは操作が簡単で失敗の少ない各種の懸垂下降器が使われるようになった。
