A medical scientist born in Nagano Prefecture. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Tokyo Imperial University (1906) and studied under Aoyama Tanemichi at the Department of Internal Medicine. He studied in the United States and Germany from 1908 (Meiji 41), and returned to Japan in 1913 to become a professor at the Department of Medicine of Tohoku Imperial University, and in 1915 became a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the same university. He was appointed president of Tohoku Imperial University in 1940 (Showa 15), and in 1941 he founded the Institute of Mycobacteria at the university and became its first director. He played a leading role in research on tuberculosis bacteria, and in turn in its treatment and prevention, and proposed the so-called triple therapy for tuberculosis, which uses the three drugs Einar, Stomai, and Pass, and conducted clinical and histopathological research on its therapeutic effects. He also conducted research on the extraction of insulin. He was awarded the Order of Culture in 1952 (Showa 27).
