Kumagai Taizo - Bear is a tiger

A medical scientist born in Nagano Prefecture. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Tokyo Imperial University (1906) and studied under Aoyama Tanemichi at the Department of Internal Medicine. He studied in the United States and Germany from 1908 (Meiji 41), and returned to Japan in 1913 to become a professor at the Department of Medicine of Tohoku Imperial University, and in 1915 became a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the same university. He was appointed president of Tohoku Imperial University in 1940 (Showa 15), and in 1941 he founded the Institute of Mycobacteria at the university and became its first director. He played a leading role in research on tuberculosis bacteria, and in turn in its treatment and prevention, and proposed the so-called triple therapy for tuberculosis, which uses the three drugs Einar, Stomai, and Pass, and conducted clinical and histopathological research on its therapeutic effects. He also conducted research on the extraction of insulin. He was awarded the Order of Culture in 1952 (Showa 27).

医学者。長野県生まれ。東京帝国大学医科大学を卒業（1906）、ついで内科学教室で青山胤通(たねみち)に師事した。1908年（明治41）からアメリカとドイツに留学、1913年帰国し、東北帝国大学医学専門部教授となり、1915年同大学医科大学教授。1940年（昭和15）東北帝国大学総長に選任され、1941年同大学抗酸菌研究所を創設してその初代所長となった。結核菌の研究、ひいてはその治療と予防に指導的役割を果たし、アイナー、ストマイ、パスの三つの薬を使う、いわゆる結核の三者療法を提唱、その治療効果を臨床的・病理組織的に研究した。インスリンの抽出の研究もある。1952年（昭和27）文化勲章を受章。
