King of Mauretania during the Roman Empire. Reigned 25 BC - 23 AD. Date of birth and death unknown. Son of Numidian king Juba I. Raised in Rome as a prisoner of war, he became a close aide to Octavian (Augustus) and gained Roman citizenship. After Octavian ascended to power, he was made king of Mauretania in place of the native kingship as part of Octavian's plan to pacify North Africa, and also ruled Gaetulia (southern Numidia). He married Kleopatra Selēnē, daughter of Antony and Cleopatra, and built the Roman-style capital Caesarea (now Cherchel, Algeria), and worked to introduce Greek and Roman culture and promote industry (dyes, etc.).
