1911‐1996 Syrian politician. He studied law and participated in the anti-British movement in Iraq in 1941 and the Palestine War (First Arab-Israeli War) in 1948. He later advocated land reform, focusing on his hometown of Hama. He was elected as a member of parliament every year from 1943 until 1961. He became Minister of Agriculture in 1949 and Minister of Defense from 1949 to 1950. He founded the Arab Socialist Party in 1950, which later merged with the Ba'ath Party. He became Speaker of the House of Representatives in 1957 and Vice President and Minister of Justice from 1958 to 1959 during the period of unification with Egypt. He was arrested after the coup in 1963 and moved to Lebanon, where he tried to unite forces critical of the current Syrian regime. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
