Crossandra (English spelling)

Japanese: クロサンドラ（英語表記）Crossandra

It is an evergreen shrub or perennial plant belonging to the genus Crosandra (Crossandra genus) of the family Acanthaceae, and there are more than 20 species found in tropical Africa, Madagascar, and India. In Japan, the main species cultivated for decorative purposes is C. infundibuliformis Nees (illustration). The leaves are opposite and dark green and glossy. The flowers bloom mainly in summer in spikes that emerge from the axils at the top of the leaves, are funnel-shaped, orange-red, have five lobes at the tip, are tubular at the bottom, and bloom successively from the bottom of the square bracts.

キツネノマゴ科クロサンドラ属(ヘリトリオシベ属)に属する常緑低木または多年草で，熱帯アフリカ，マダガスカル，インドに20種あまりがある。日本では観賞用にジョウゴバナC.infundibuliformis Nees(一名ヘリトリオシベ)（イラスト）がおもに栽培されている。葉は対生し，濃緑色で光沢がある。花はおもに夏のころ，頂部の葉腋（ようえき）から花穂をだしてつき，じょうご状で橙赤色，先端部は5裂し下部は管状となり，四角ばった苞の下部から順次咲く。
