Tomikawa Ginsetsu

Japanese:
Tomikawa Ginsetsu

Dates of birth and death unknown. Ukiyo-e artist of the mid-Edo period, author of Kusazoshi (black book and blue book). Also known as Fusanobu. Commonly known as Yamamoto Kuzaemon, he was the owner of an ezoushi wholesaler in Edo Otenma-cho, and it is said that he turned to painting after the family business declined, but this is not certain. In 1772 (An'ei 1), he changed his pen name to Ginsetsu. He produced over 280 works between 1760 (Horeki 10) and 1777, most of which were his own drawings. The contents are diverse, including the Soga story "Oiso no Torakurumazuka Monogatari," "Ukiserasuke Ippai no Yume" with a humorous contemporary protagonist, "Momotaro and Kakitaro's Contest of Courage" which is an adaptation of a fairy tale, and "Elegant Kantan: Ukiyoeigamakura," a love story-like work, and they greatly influenced later Kibyoshi novels. He is a typical example of a writer of children's stories from the mid-modern period.
