A spirit of earth in the 16th century alchemist Paracelsus's Book of Fairies. In English, gnome. A coined word based on the Greek words gē (earth) + nomos (dwelling) and gnōsis (knowledge), gnomes are depicted as ugly old dwarves who live underground and know the location of gold and silver. They are also the patron deities of miners, and are identified with the Cornish knocker, which is believed to knock on the ground to let people know where the ore is, and the Welsh coblynau.
