An ancient state with its capital at Ecbatana (present-day Hamadan) on the Iranian plateau. Inhabited by the Iranian Median people, it was founded by Deioces at the end of the 8th century BC. It flourished during the reign of its third king, Cyaxares (reigned 625-585 BC), who captured Nineveh in 612 BC and destroyed Assyria. After fighting with the Lydian Kingdom, it was conquered by Cyrus II of Persia in 550 BC.

イラン高原のエクバタナ（現ハマダーン）を首都にした古代国家。イラン系のメディアMedia人が居住し，前８世紀末，デイオケスが建国。第３代の王キュアクサレス（在位前625年―前585年）の時大いに発展し，前612年ニネベを陥れてアッシリアを滅ぼした。リュディア王国と争った後，前550年ペルシアのキュロス２世に征服された。
