An evergreen shrub of the Berberidaceae family. Native to India and China. In Japan, it is cultivated and grows wild in the mountains and fields of central and southern Japan. It grows to about 2m in height, has few branches, and has leaves clustered at the end of the stem. It has large, tripinnate compound leaves, and the leaflets are lanceolate or narrow elliptical, 3-7cm long. In June, it produces an upright panicle at the top of the stem, and produces many white, six-petal, star-shaped flowers. In late autumn, the spherical fruits ripen to red, and the autumn leaves are beautiful, so it is used as an ornamental tree or potted plant. Horticultural varieties include the white-fruited white nandina and the pale purple-fruited Fuji nandina, and the densely-foliated Sasaba nandina, which is good for cut flowers. However, there is only one species in one genus, and it is sometimes separated from the Berberidaceae family and classified as the Nandinae family. The fruit is dried and used as a cough suppressant.
