… The professions of monkey pullers and monkey trainers, who tame monkeys, teach them tricks, and make them dance to beg for money, have been known since the 12th century, and are included in the Thirty-two Artisans' Poetry Contest. There is the Kyogen play Utsubozaru, and in the early modern period, monkey pullers would visit stable prayers for feudal lords and others, make monkeys dance, and on the way visit townhouses to make congratulatory speeches. This was often done during the New Year, and is also a seasonal theme in haiku poetry. …
