1900‐70 French art historian. Born in Paris, he studied literature and art history philology. After submitting his doctoral thesis on the sculptures of the Palace of Versailles and teaching in Warsaw for five years, he became a professor at the University of Strasbourg in 1936 and taught a course in sociology of art at the École des Hautes Etudes in Paris in 1948. Francastel attempted to introduce aesthetics and sociology into the interpretation of art, rejecting the so-called enumeration of historical facts. In other words, he believed that the basic element of artistic expression, known as "plastic language," is an independent unit different from language and is the foundation of human cultural activity, and he attempted to interpret such unwritten elements as manifestations of the spiritual activity of a certain era and society.
