Isakovic, A.

...Many war stories about partisan warfare were able to become literature thanks to this background and the efforts of writers such as Krleja, who advocated creative freedom. Examples include the Serbian writer Čošić, who made his debut with The Sun Is Far Away (1951), Antonije Isaković (1923- ), who made his debut with the Hemingway-style collection of short stories The Big Children (1962), the Montenegrin writer Larić, who won the Njegoš Prize for The Mountain of Sighs (1962), and the Bosnian writer Branko Ćopić (1915- ), who added humor to his stories. In opposition to this trend, the works of Bulatovic of Montenegro, who portrayed angry young people in a socialist country, Branimir Šćepanović (1937- ), who explored the absurd, and Danilo Kiš (1935-89), who created a unique world with Jewish eloquence and classicism, were translated into European languages and highly praised as the flag-bearers of new Yugoslav literature.
